Tired of talking? Let’s switch it up.

Accelerated Resolution Therapy in NYC.

Let’s try something different.

You’ve tried therapy before, but you thought you would feel better by now. Talking was helpful for you to understand your feelings but not enough to change them for long. If you’re ready to go deeper in your healing, Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) can help.

Accelerated Resolution Therapy helps you create new associations with a difficult memory or past trauma. ART is a form of therapy that helps you process unresolved issues from the past, and can also help you overcome phobias, address daily issues and symptoms differently, and even invoke motivation to change bad habits. ART combines bilateral stimulation with visualization techniques and exposures to allow you to think and feel differently about a topic or theme.

You’re ready to stop feeling…

Stuck in a past memory

Overwhelmed by triggers

Reactive to reminders

Have you ever dealt with a disorganized closet, where nothing had its own space? Things would fall out unexpectedly when you were searching for something else, causing you frustration and stress. You might even avoid your closet because you know things are chaotic in there. We hold traumatic memories in a similar way; sometimes feeling like there’s no control over when they surface and no knowing what will come up when you get into your head.

The process of Accelerated Resolution Therapy can feel like cleaning out and organizing your closet, but for your brain and library of memories instead. Everything is still in there, but easier to get to. Storing your memories in a different way can feel less worrisome when they surface again. You won’t get rid of them, but they have a place to rest and you can revisit them with more control. Accelerated Resolution Therapy does not rewrite your past, but helps you change how you feel when you think about it.

Accelerated Resolution Therapy can help you feel less stuck and more free to move forward.

  • Accelerated Resolution Therapy targets your brain in a different way than traditional talk therapy. With the help of bilateral stimulation, your nervous system will feel disarmed during ART. This allows you to think back on previous memories in a less distressing way than how you typically re-experience them, allowing you to rewrite the impact of the past. Goals for ART may include feeling less reactive to triggers, more in control of emotions around previous traumas, and feeling more equipped to leave the past behind instead of letting it affect current behaviors and emotions.

  • Bilateral stimulation (BLS) engages both sides of your brain at the same time. This process calms your brain to help you revisit a traumatic memory in a way that feels safer. BLS can be done through guided eye movements, listening to auditory tones, or tapping your body.

I like to compare the effect of BLS to fixing a false alarm system. If the alarm is overly sensitive, it will perceive “danger” that is not actually there, but when it’s working as expected it won’t go off unless it absolutely needs to. When you feel safe mentally and physically during an ART session as a result of engaging in bilateral stimulation, your brain can heal in a different way and you don’t feel as threatened or activated.

  • ART Therapy has a structured protocol, so I will provide directions and prompts for you throughout the entire session. You begin by reflecting on a previous memory a few times to allow your brain to reprocess it and adjust the way your body will respond to your thoughts. You’ll experience negative sensations and emotions in the beginning of the process, which helps you feel better afterwards. We’ll prepare for ART by discussing it in our regular talk sessions and you’ll decide when you feel ready to begin.

  • Many people describe ART to be a creative and surprising process. Your body will feel relaxed with the help of bilateral stimulation, and you will experience intense emotions throughout the session. While the beginning of the protocol focuses on negative sensations and emotions, you will also feel the intensity of relief and optimism that typically comes at the end of the processing. Many people feel physically relaxed and emotionally at ease at the end of the session and share positive insights they gained immediately afterwards.

The Process

01

Before

In regular talk therapy sessions, we will explore memories and themes that you can reprocess using Accelerated Resolution Therapy. I’ll share more information about what to expect during and after the ART session and answer all of your questions about the experience. I’ll share tips on how you can prepare and take care of yourself on the day of our session, and discuss what you may experience immediately and in the days afterward.

02

During

I offer Accelerated Resolution Therapy both online and in-person. The protocol and bilateral stimulation options are the same regardless of how we are meeting. Depending on your preferences and comfort, you may move your eyes to a cue I create or tap on your body with my instruction to facilitate bilateral stimulation. Unlike our regular therapy sessions, you won’t be talking too much during ART. The session is highly structured and I aim to answer all of your questions in the sessions leading up to ART, so we can dive right in at the start of our session time.

03

After

We can spend as much time as you’d like discussing your ART session in our follow up talk session. I’ll continue to check in occasionally after ART to help you reflect on the progress sustained, and determine whether another session focusing on the same content would be helpful to further your results. Once you get a feel for how ART works, you may find other things you’d like to use it for. I see great results in my clients who supplement regular talk sessions with ART.

Frequently asked questions —

  • With Accelerated Resolution Therapy, we say that your brain will know what to do. You don’t need clear memories of what you want to process to try ART, and we will spend lots of time preparing before your first session so you have an idea of what you’ll be focusing on. Sometimes memories naturally resurface during talk sessions. If you can’t recall the past, it’s for a reason and we will honor how your brain is trying to protect you.

  • Many people love ART because you don’t actually have to talk about the details of your trauma or memory to have a successful experience. You’re in charge of what you share during ART, and you always have the choice to withhold details if you’d like.

  • You can do ART even if this is your first time in therapy! I alway build rapport first to create a strong working relationship with all of my clients, and that will help you feel prepared for ART. We will have a standard intake process that could span a few sessions, and during these meetings I’ll share more information about how ART can help you and assess if you are a good candidate and feel ready for it. We will not engage in ART in our initial sessions together. Please note that I don’t currently offer ART as a standalone treatment option for clients who already have a talk therapist, but rather as a supplemental intervention to my work.

  • If you don’t feel that ART is beneficial for you, I will hep you explore other trauma therapies that could be more helpful and provide you referrals if I can’t provide the services you are looking for.
